Abstract

Religion continues to play a key role in presidential politics this election cycle, as new complexities mix with ongoing tensions between American religions and American political culture. Though听a new poll听shows increasing discomfort with the level of religious language in the current campaigns, the majority of Americans embrace some connection between faith and politics. Join us as the Boisi Center convenes three of the nation's most prominent and insightful political and cultural analysts for a robust discussion about the role of religions in the presidential campaigns thus far.

Event Recap

To discuss the hotly contested 2012 Republican presidential primaries, the Boisi Center invited Harvard historian Jill Lepore and writer Rebecca Traister to talk with Alan Wolfe at an April 12 panel. Their wide-ranging conversation pondered the impact of what Lepore called 鈥渢he politics of righteousness,鈥 mused upon the political impact of Mitt Romney鈥檚 Mormonism and Rick Santorum鈥檚 Catholicism, and predicted that the general electon is likely to serve as a national referendum on the principle that government cannot be trusted to act effectively on behalf of its citizens.

Lepore, Jill.听听(Princeton University Press, 2010).听Americans have always put the past to political ends. This book tells the story of the centuries-long struggle over the meaning of the nation's founding, including the battle waged by the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and evangelical Christians to "take back America."

Lepore, Jill.听听(Vintage 1999).听King Philip's War, the excruciating racial war--colonists against Indians--that erupted in New England in 1675, was, in proportion to population, the bloodiest in American history. Some even argued that the massacres and outrages on both sides were too horrific to "deserve the name of a war."

Traister, Rebecca.听听(Free Press 2010).听Traister argues that, although, the 2008 election didn鈥檛 give us our first woman president or vice president, the exhilarating campaign was nonetheless transformative for American women and for the nation.
