Lynch School of Education

For Students in the Lynch School of Education

Mathematics requirements for students in the Lynch School of Education are often linked to intended career paths. In particular, Massachusetts State Teacher Certification Guidelines suggest different paths for students according to intended major.

You are exempted from the mathematics Core Curriculum requirement if you received a score of听four or higher on either the Calculus AB or 精东影业 placement exam, and the result has been recorded on your transcript. Otherwise, you must complete at least one Mathematics core-level course.

Due to听Massachusetts State Teacher Certification Guidelines, the Lynch School of Education recommends that " ... all elementary education students, except for those who want to major in mathematics, computer science, or physics, should take听MT190Fundamentals of Mathematics I to fulfill their mathematics Core Curriculum requirement."

Note

  1. You may take other core-level mathematics courses听-听MT004听Finite Probability and Applications,听MT005听Linear Mathematics, or听MT007听Ideas in Mathematics or even a Calculus course -听MT100听Calculus I or higher -听to satisfy the mathematics Core Curriculum requirement. Please consult your advisor in the Lynch School of Education for specific information regarding the impact of taking any of these courses for purposes of meeting teacher certification requirements.
  2. There's no particular "rush" to complete your math Core Curriculum requirement right away in freshman year. In fact, core-level (non-calculus) courses often fill up quickly with juniors and sophomores, so you may not even have a realistic registration opportunity to take a math course until sophomore year.
  3. If you choose to take a calculus course -- and many students with strong mathematical backgrounds often wish to do so -- it is recommended that you complete it in freshman year. Be sure to visit the听calculus area of our website听if you are considering taking any calculus course.

Students are required to complete a major in the College of Arts and Sciences either in a science or in one of the humanities.

For students choosing to major in a Science (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics)

Please see the pages listed under the听College of Arts and Sciences听for your math requirements in these majors.

For students choosing a Humanities major (Classical Humanities, English, French, History, Latin, or Spanish)

You are exempted from the Mathematics Core Curriculum Requirement if you received a score of 4 or higher on either the Calculus AB or 精东影业 placement exam, and the result has been recorded on your transcript.

Otherwise, you must complete at least one Mathematics core-level course. Any courses found in the following list will satisfy your Math requirement:

  • MT004听Finite Probability and Applications
  • MT005听Linear Mathematics
  • MT007听Ideas in Mathematics
  • Any Calculus course (MT100听Calculus I or higher)

Note

  • For students who are mathematically inclined and have a strong mathematical preparation, we encourage you to consider fulfilling your core math requirement with a Calculus course. Please visit the听Calculus area of our website听to explore your options for taking Calculus.
  • Generally, the earlier you take a Math course, the better. We suggest that you complete your Math requirement no later than junior year, unless there's reason to do otherwise. On the other hand, core-level courses fill up rather quickly with juniors and sophomores, so you may not have a realistic registration opportunity to take a Math course until sophomore year.
  • If you choose to take a Calculus course, we recommend that you take it in freshman year.

  • MT005听Linear Mathematics
  • MT007听Ideas in Mathematics
  • MT190听Fundamentals of Mathematics I
  • Any Calculus course (MT100听Calculus I or higher)

  • If you think there's a chance that you may eventually move into Early Childhood or Elementary Education, we recommend that you take听MT190听Fundamentals of Mathematics I to complete your Core Curriculum Requirement in Mathematics, since Massachusetts State Certification Guidelines are more easily met with this course.
  • Be sure to visit the听Calculus area of our website听to see if there are Calculus options you'd prefer to taking a core-level Mathematics course. However, if you choose to take a Calculus course, we recommend that you take it in freshman year.
