What to Expect

The theme of the 2024 Summer Institute is Equitable Higher Education in Times of Disruption.

At the Summer Institute, participants can expect to:

  • engage in substantive discussions about this important topic,
  • share their work, in a supportive environment, and receive both written and oral feedback from established scholars,听
  • network with other early career researchers, and
  • participate in discussions about important developmental topics, such as innovative methods, disseminating your scholarship, and the international job search.

The Summer Institute combines individual paper presentations, panel discussions with expert speakers and opportunities for group discussion and networking for participants and presenters.听

Philip G. Altbach founded the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College in 1994 and directed it from the time of its founding until his retirement in 2013. Phil has received numerous awards during his distinguished career, include NAFSA鈥檚 Houlihan award for distinguished contributions to international education and the ASHE Bowen distinguished career award. He was Distinguished Scholar Leader for the New Century Scholars initiative of the Fulbright program (2004-2006), a senior associate of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and an Erudite Scholar of the Government of Kerala (India). In addition to Boston College, he has taught at Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin and the State University of New York at Buffalo. Phil has written and/or edited nearly 100 books and over 100 refereed articles on international and comparative higher education.

Dr. Castiello-Guti茅rrez is a scholar-practitioner whose work is听centered on the intersection of organizational theory around higher education institutions,听their global interconnectedness, and current global policies and practices of internationalization听of higher education.

Shanton Chang is Professor of Information Behavior and Information Systems at the School of Computing and Information Systems, The University of Melbourne (Australia). He is also Associate Dean (International) at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. He has extensive experience in international education, having been involved in recruitment, teaching and learning across cultures, career mentoring, international education strategy and policy. Shanton works closely with industry partners to understand the skills that employers expect from graduates. He is also a well published author on the information behaviors of international students. His work includes a co-edited book 鈥淒igital Experiences of International Students: Challenging Assumptions and Rethinking Engagement鈥, and a special issue of the Journal of Studies in International Education on 鈥楧igitalisation of International Education: Opportunities and Disruptions鈥.

A globally renowned scholar, Hans de Wit has made his name studying the internationalization of higher education.听From 2015-2020, Hans served as Director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College. He has also served as Director of the Center for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI) at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan (Italy) and as Vice-President for International Affairs and Senior Advisor International at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands).听Hans is a Senior Fellow at the International Association of Universities (based at UNESCO), a founding member and past president of the European Association for International Education and founding editor of the Journal of Studies in International Education.

Omolabake Fakunle is Chancellor鈥檚 Fellow and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Moray听House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. She is also an Affiliate Faculty member at听the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI), Universit脿 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milano,听and a member of the Scottish Funding Council鈥檚 Tertiary Quality Framework Expert Advisory听Group. Omolabake鈥檚 research focuses on inclusivity in internationalisation, employability, and听decoloniality.

Giorgio Marinoni has been Manager of Higher Education and Internationalization at the International Association of Universities (IAU) since February 2015. Among his responsibilities at IAU are research projects, advisory services and external representation of the Association for any matters concerning internationalization. Giorgio is the coordination of the ISAS (2.0) programof advisory services for advancing internationalization and the coordinator of the Network of International Education Associations (NIEA), a global network of non-profit, non-government associations whose main stated purpose is to advance international higher education. He has published the report of the 5th Global Survey on Internationalization of Higher Education and of the 1st and 2nd Global Surveys on the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education and is the coordinator of the 6th Global Survey on Internationalization of Higher Education. Before his current position at IAU, Giorgio Marinoni worked for UNICA, the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe.

Amy Scott Metcalfe is a Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Studies at the听University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Her research focuses on higher education in the听North American region, including (post)critical approaches to internationalization, academic labor and听mobility, and critical policy studies in education. Dr. Metcalfe has a particular interest in visual research听methods, with an emphasis on photographic methodologies, art historical approaches, and visual听analysis.

Lisa Unangst is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Leadership at Empire State听University. Her research interests include how displaced learners access and experience higher听education; international alumni affairs; and cross-national constructions of "diversity." Lisa has听served as associate editor of Higher Education Research & Development since 2020 and is听author of the forthcoming book Immigrants and refugees at German universities: Diversity,听internationalization and anticolonial considerations (Routledge).

Paper Submission

Any graduate student or early career professional* is invited to participate in the 2024 WES-CIHE Summer Institute. Participants who wish to participate should submit a 1,000-word paper representing original research relevant to the conference theme of 鈥渆quitable higher education in times of disruption."

In an era of disruptions of many types - such as pandemics, climate change, and conflict, just to name a few - higher education is faced with challenges to navigate rapidly changing realities, overcome economic, political, ecological, and technological difficulties, and equitably serve its multiple stakeholders. We invite submissions of empirical research or conceptual work that is concerned with advancing higher education equity against this backdrop, whether the focus is on students, teachers, researchers, scholars, higher education practitioners, or any other stakeholder, and whether the submission targets local, national or international disruption(s).

Selected participants will be invited to present their paper at the Summer Institute. Selected papers will also be considered for publication in a future edition of听CIHE Perspectives.

    • 1,000 word paper (exclusive of references);
    • Curriculum vitae (CV)听
  • Applications must be received by听January 31, 2024
  • All materials should be submitted by email to wescihesummerinstitute@bc.edu.

Selected participants will be informed by February 15.听 Limited travel funding and two nights鈥 free accommodation will be offered to selected participants based outside the Boston area.

There is no option to register/attend without submitting a paper.

* Early career professionals are eligible if they completed their terminal degree within the past five years.

Registration Fees

No registration fees will be collected. All accepted participants can attend the event, free of charge. Space is limited.

Venue

The 2024 WES-CIHE Summer Institute will be held on the campus of Boston College, located in Chestnut Hill, MA, just 20 minutes from Boston鈥檚 Logan Airport.

Accommodations

Selected participants will receive free accommodation in the Boston University dormitories in downtown Boston for the nights of June 4 and 5. (A shuttle service will be provided to bring participants to Boston College from the BU dormitories).
